Every PTE Academic Speaking Task Explained

The Speaking module is combined with Writing in the first section. These 5 task types appear in every PTE Academic test.

01

Read Aloud

Read a passage of up to 60 words aloud. The highest-scoring speaking task — contributes to both Speaking and Reading scores. Fluency and pace matter more than perfect pronunciation.

Preparation: 30–40 sec Speaking: up to 40 sec High impact
02

Repeat Sentence

Listen to a sentence (3–9 seconds) and repeat it word for word. Tests both Listening and Speaking simultaneously. Missing words significantly reduces your score.

No preparation time Repeat immediately Memory task
03

Describe Image

Look at a graph, chart, diagram or image and describe it in 40 seconds. Use a 4-part structure: Overview → Highest/Lowest → Key Trend → Conclusion. Works for every image type.

Preparation: 25 sec Speaking: 40 sec Template helps
04

Re-tell Lecture

Listen to an academic lecture (60–90 seconds) then re-tell it in your own words within 40 seconds. Strong note-taking during the lecture is essential for this task.

Preparation: 10 sec Speaking: 40 sec Note-taking key
05

Answer Short Question

Listen to a question and respond with one or two words. Tests general knowledge and vocabulary. These are quick marks — do not overthink them.

No preparation time 1–2 word answer Quick marks

Which Task Matters Most?

Read Aloud is the single most important speaking task — it contributes to both your Speaking and Reading communicative scores. Most test-takers underestimate it. Practise Read Aloud daily for 15 minutes minimum.

PassPTETest Tip
Strategy Guide

Top Tips to Improve Your PTE Speaking Score

These are the most effective strategies for raising your Speaking communicative score — based on how the AI scoring system evaluates your responses.

Tip 01

Never Pause Unnaturally

The AI scoring system penalises disfluency — unnatural pauses, filler sounds like "um" or "uh", and restarting mid-word. Speak at a steady academic pace even if you mispronounce a word. Fluency scores higher than perfect pronunciation.

Tip 02

Use a Template for Describe Image

The same 4-part structure works for every image type. Practice it until it is automatic: state the overall topic, mention the highest and lowest values, describe the key trend, and finish with a brief conclusion. Never go silent — keep speaking for the full 40 seconds.

Tip 03

Practise Read Aloud Every Day

Read Aloud contributes to both Speaking and Reading scores — making it the highest-impact task in the entire test. Read academic articles aloud for 15 minutes each day. Focus on maintaining pace and not hesitating at unfamiliar words.

Tip 04

Note-Take During Re-tell Lecture

You have a notepad in the test centre. During the lecture recording, write down the topic, 3–4 key points, and any numbers or names. Use these notes to structure your 40-second re-tell. Without notes, most test-takers forget 60% of the content.

Tip 05

Do Not Repeat or Correct Yourself

If you say the wrong word, continue speaking. Stopping to correct yourself creates a pause and triggers a disfluency flag in the AI system. One mispronounced word is far less damaging than an unnatural pause or restart.

Tip 06

Use the Microphone Correctly

In the real test, your microphone starts recording immediately when the beep sounds. Begin speaking within 1–2 seconds. Waiting too long before starting is marked as a false start. Practise starting promptly using our mock tests.

How AI Scores Your Speaking

What the PTE Speaking Score Measures

Your PTE Academic Speaking communicative score is built from three enabling skills — all scored by AI with no human examiner.

🗣️ Oral Fluency Most important enabling skill

Measures the flow and naturalness of your speech. Pauses, hesitations, and unnatural rhythm all reduce this score. Target: smooth, connected academic speech.

🔤 Pronunciation Second most important

Measures clarity of individual sounds, word stress, and sentence rhythm. The AI accepts a range of native accents — perfect British or American accent is not required.

📚 Vocabulary Supporting skill

Measures the range and accuracy of vocabulary in your written responses. In Speaking, choosing precise academic words improves your overall Vocabulary enabling score.

"My Speaking score was stuck at 59 across two real PTE Academic attempts. I could not understand why because my English felt strong. After using PassPTETest, I realised I was pausing too long before answering and going silent during Describe Image before the 40 seconds finished. Once I started using the 4-part template and keeping my pace steady throughout, my Speaking jumped to 76 on my third attempt. That single change got me the Proficient English score I needed for my subclass 189 PR application."

"Read Aloud was the task I kept ignoring during preparation because I thought it was easy. PassPTETest showed me it was actually the most important task in the entire exam — it scores both Speaking and Reading at the same time. I started practising it every morning for 15 minutes using academic articles. My overall PTE score went from 61 to 74 in one attempt. I am now enrolled at the University of Queensland and my student visa was approved without any issues."

"I was genuinely worried about the Speaking section because English is my third language. But the PassPTETest speaking tips made me realise the AI does not care about your accent — it cares about fluency and pace. I stopped trying to sound British and just focused on speaking smoothly without stopping. My Pronunciation score actually went up even though I changed nothing about my accent. I passed with a Speaking score of 79 for my AHPRA nursing registration application."

"The Re-tell Lecture task was my biggest weakness. I would listen carefully but then blank out completely when it was time to speak. The PassPTETest tip about writing down the topic, three key points, and any numbers during the recording changed everything. I went from getting maybe two sentences out to filling the full 40 seconds with organised content every time. Combined with daily Repeat Sentence practice, my Speaking score improved by 18 points across two months of preparation."

Why is PTE Speaking scored differently from IELTS? +
PTE Academic Speaking is 100% AI scored — there is no human examiner. This means your score is based purely on Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, and content accuracy — not the subjective opinion of an examiner. Many test-takers find this more consistent and fair than IELTS Speaking.
Is my accent a problem in PTE Speaking? +
No. The PTE Academic AI scoring system is trained to recognise a wide range of native accents — Indian, Filipino, Chinese, Arabic, and others. You do not need a British or American accent. What matters is clarity, pace, and natural flow — not accent origin.
What is the most important speaking task to practise? +
Read Aloud is the most important Speaking task because it contributes to both your Speaking and Reading communicative scores. It also has more items per test than any other speaking task. Practise Read Aloud daily for the fastest score improvement.
Why do I keep scoring low on Describe Image? +
The most common reason is going silent or running out of things to say within the 40-second limit. Use a structured 4-part template every time: state the topic, mention extremes, describe the trend, and conclude. The template works for bar charts, pie charts, maps, line graphs, and process diagrams.
How can PassPTETest help me improve my Speaking score? +
Our mock tests give you AI-scored Speaking results including separate Oral Fluency and Pronunciation scores — so you know exactly which enabling skill to work on. Our live tuition sessions include personalised Read Aloud shadowing, Describe Image template training, and Repeat Sentence memory techniques.
